OSR Survival Horror: Quick Build Ability/Skill Packages

The purpose of my OSR Survival Horror  rules mods (found HERE) is to emulate horror and slasher movies of years gone by. To do so we need easily created and expendable characters. With the base system I have in the Survival Horror post I have added the following packages to help with this.

  1. Roll the six base attributes..
  2. Grab a skill package (and rearrange a few points to customize if desired.)
  3. Do the basic math of old school D&D attacks, saving throws, etc.
  4. Get some basic gear from the DM.
  5. Play.

These packages are built for 2 hit dice characters, the minimum hit dice for what I consider average Survival Horror PC's and NPC's. Especially with average hit points for NPC's.

2 hit dice give  each package 12 points of abilities and skills.
For more experienced or just tougher PC's add more hit dice . Each hit dice added also ads 2 more ability/skill points as seen in the Survival Horror post.

Don't sweat it. Just play it up like a good horror film and when you die jump right back in with a quick built replacement.

  1. Excellent! I could see putting gear on cards, like in the old Ghostbusters RPG, to streamline that bookkeeping, too.

  2. That is a great idea or a die drop table. Night of the Slashers has a great die drop encounter/stock table. Thanks for mentioning those slasher games. Interesting and useful.
